Gracefully curved concrete banks contain the Liesbeek for many miles and save hundreds of tons of earth which would otherwise be washed down to the sea in winter. Serious erosion is still taking place in the upper reaches of the river, but canalization is being steadily pushed forward. This picture, in a setting of oaks, shows work recently completed at Newlands.

The old wine cellar at Koornhoop, Mowbray. It was later decided not to proclaim the house and wine cellar, as it would cost too much to keep them in repair, so only the dovecote and gables were proclaimed. This dovecote was said to be the only one of its kind in South Africa.
