Description
-
The Algairiyan Moslem school, in Pontac Street, District Six, is closing down because of the Group Areas Act. The school, which numbers many religious and community leaders among its 3 000 or so past students, was founded in Cape Town in 1928 and moved to Wellington between 1930 and 1936. Its retiring founder and teacher, Ghalifa Ebrahiem, 70, said yesterday: "The school is closing because the Moslem community has been dispersed and students can no longer afford to pay fares from the suburbs where they have been moved to the school. If it were not for the Group Areas Act, the school would have continued."
