Church Square, Cape Town, circa 1870
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Architecture, Urban development, Civil services, Church buildings
-
Description
-
Church Square has been much in the news lately with the closing down of the Civil Service Club (second and third building from the left) and its amalgamation with the City Club in Queen Victoria Street in 1976. This picture was taken in 1870, and shows the Gothic facade of the Rev. Dr. John Phillip's church (which later became incorporated in the Civil Service Club) and the pedimented building which began to house members of the club in 1865. Great changes have been made to both buildings since that year and even bigger ones can be expected in the years to come. Cape Archives.

Subject

-
Description
-
Workmen are repairing and restoring the historic Lutheran Church in Strand Street, the country's oldest building and one of a number of fine examples of 18th Century architecture in Strand Street. The copper spire, dominated by an orb and crown on the weathervane, is being painted to preserve it from the effects of sea air and pollution. The Rev Charles Ellefson, minister of the church, said it was last painted and repaired in 1970 when storm winds blew off the corrugated iron roof.

The Green Point Common, once an open grazing ground for cattle, has been transformed in recent years to meet the recreational and sporting needs of Cape Town's growing population. This panoramic view, taken on Monday from Signal Hill, shows the maze of playing fields, club houses and access roads now laid out across the Common from Three Anchor Bay (on left) to the York Road traffic circle and tree-lined Metropolitan Golf Course (on right). Conspicuous landmarks are the building and tower of Christian Brothers' College, Green Point (bottom right), the oval Stadium on the common, and Robben Island in the distance.
