Grassy Park resident with electricity bills, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Western Cape (South Africa), Grassy Park (Cape Town, South Africa), Urban areas, Municipal services, Electric industries
-
Description
-
An unemployed Grassy Park mother will have to pay the municipality R409 because of a computer error in calculating her electricity bill over the past two-and-a-half years. Mrs Sadia Ferrier of Parklands Estate was told in April her meter was faulty and asked to pay R409 in arrears. "I did not know what was happening. I gave my daughter the money for the account every month and she paid it," said Mrs Ferrier. Receipts since October 1979 show that Mrs Ferrier's accounts ranged between R4,06 in 1979 and R12,53 in November 1980 and between R1,14 in March last year and R19,56 in March this year. Her monthly electricity consumption was between three units and 300 units.

-
Description
-
The old Burger Building in Keerom Street, which occupies a 1 364 m2 site near the Supreme Court in central Cape Town, has been sold for R5 250 000 - more than eight times the municipal valuation of R643 380. New owners are Barrister's Court Investment of The Strand. The newspaper group sold the building for R900 000 in 1981 and an unusual condition of sale was that the old clock had to be kept going. More than R1 million was spent on renovations and the building was converted into smaller offices which were sold under sectional title.

Aerial view from Signal Hill over the City Bowl and Cape Flats, Cape Town
-
Subject
-
Cape Town (South Africa), Urban development, City planning, Environment
-
Description
-
This unusual aerial view of Cape Town has all the boldness, optimism and excitement of the New Year. The great vista stretching over the Cape Flats towards Hottentots Holland to symbolize the future. Indeed it is in this direction that much of the Peninsula's expansion is taking place. But Table Mountain is still dominant and timeless, defying any further encroachment up its slopes. The picture was taken at a height of 4,500 ft. The four famous beaches of Clifton are easily recognized at the bottom on the left. Bottom right is Camps Bay, some of whose residents might even be able to point out their own houses. Voortrekker Road (top left) through Kensington, Goodwood, Parow and Bellville, is clearly visible, so are the two cooling towers of the Athlone power station, with Langa just beyond them.

Church Square, Cape Town, circa 1870
-
Subject
-

-
Description
-
Church Square has been much in the news lately with the closing down of the Civil Service Club (second and third building from the left) and its amalgamation with the City Club in Queen Victoria Street in 1976. This picture was taken in 1870, and shows the Gothic facade of the Rev. Dr. John Phillip's church (which later became incorporated in the Civil Service Club) and the pedimented building which began to house members of the club in 1865. Great changes have been made to both buildings since that year and even bigger ones can be expected in the years to come. Cape Archives.
