Post Office stone', Cape Town
-
Subject

Description
-
This old post office stone is probably one of the oldest found in the country. It was dug up on the Golden Acre site yesterday and is being examined by South African Museum officials. There are inscriptions on both sides of the stone and the date which looks like 1577. The name of a ship is also vaguely discernible. Mr Victor Thompson, seen here, is a carpenter working on the site. He spotted the stone in sand being excavated. [Iziko Museums Identification, 2013: 'Post office stone' left at the Cape by the Wapen Van Rotterdam (1622), which left from Goeree in the Netherlands on 9 November 1621 bound for Batavia in the East and visited Table Bay on her outward voyage. Inscription reads: i(n) Schip Ghena(EMD)Rotterdam daer opKersboom Schipper Gillis-Uut de Maes den 9 NovemberDen 30 Meert A(nno) 1622 Rick van Ja]

-
Description
-
Photocopy of plan of Cape Town from Gentleman's Walk. Cape Town : Struik, 1968; by H.W.J. Picard (see BA 968.21 PICA), page 89., A note on the map suggests that the original was a plan which claimed to be dated 1785. However the plan includes the only cartographic evidence that St. George's Street (originally Berg Street), was once called Venus Straat (between 1790-1791). Picard therefore dismisses the possibility of 1785 being correct. The original cartographer is not identified.

Architectural heritage: wooden casement windows in the historic St. Stephen's Church on Riebeeck Square are being replaced as part of a restoration project sponsored by the Vernacular Architecture Society. The church was built in 1800 as the first theatre in South Africa and helped relieve the garrison's boredom during the first British occupation. It became part of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in 1857. Restoration workers, from left, Mr Kennet Plaatjies, Mr Sedick Slemming and Mr Shaheed Hendricks help conservation architect Mrs Pat Riley of the National Monuments Council size up a replacement window.
