In 1937, |Una Rooi and her grandparents were forced to move to Upington, South Africa. They learnt that their homes were burnt and all their possessions and land taken. They were forced to live in the limestone grottoes at Witdraai in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. When |Una's father, Ari, reported this to the police at the Witdraai Police Station, he was violently beaten and left for dead.

Yesterday morning Awai's general stores, 39th Avenue Elsie's River, was bustling with business. In the afternoon, all that remained was a roofless, gutted skeleton. The store was set alight by rioters who doused the interior with paraffin and put a match to it.

Found on the eastern border of the Old Bushman Camp, the Tree of Family is of great importance to the ǂKhomani San community and was both a resting and meeting place for the community. The tree also marks the grave of a member of the San community who died there in 1935. Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.
