The twin towers - which soar to 50m, dominating Observatory from the brickworks site next to Groote Schuur Hospital - will be demolished by an American company which will dynamite the smoke stacks in a controlled operation next Saturday to make way for extensions to the hospital.

The auctioneer, Mr Gavin Durr, welcomed clients from overseas, from elsewhere in South Africa, and Cape Town. Bidding started R150 000.
