In the centre of the picture are the railway motor transport sheds and marshalling yards, and to the right of them monument station, the goods yards and part of the main station. Description
-
This unusual aerial view of Cape Town has all the boldness, optimism and excitement of the New Year. The great vista stretching over the Cape Flats towards Hottentots Holland to symbolize the future. Indeed it is in this direction that much of the Peninsula's expansion is taking place. But Table Mountain is still dominant and timeless, defying any further encroachment up its slopes. The picture was taken at a height of 4,500 ft. The four famous beaches of Clifton are easily recognized at the bottom on the left. Bottom right is Camps Bay, some of whose residents might even be able to point out their own houses. Voortrekker Road (top left) through Kensington, Goodwood, Parow and Bellville, is clearly visible, so are the two cooling towers of the Athlone power station, with Langa just beyond them.

The road, now being made, will have double-width traffic lanes and the route will by-pass the populous areas of Parow and Goodwood, seen on the left, as well as Wingfield airport. The new highway will open up a vast area of as yet undeveloped country.

B: Park Road, running along the south side of the common. C: The newly built Milner Road North, completed in spite of the protests of lovers of the common. D: The group of pines which marks the place where the old chapel known as the Tabernacle once stood (there were also two graveyards there). E: The Red Cross Children's Hospital.
