A shepherd and his family, outside the home he built himself under a massive rock in the Cederberg, south-western Cape, 1987. During the bitterly cold winter months, he would trek with his employer's sheep to the Ceres-Karoo, but as soon as spring arrived, he would start the long trek back to the mountains. This had been his life for the best of 70 odd years

Bill Kemp, doing basic research for the Strata maps with Jakob Malgas, holds a recorder into which he spoke his notes and information as it was gathered. Kemp made several trips to the park during the 1997-1999 investigation period. Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.

Jakob Malgas views the Tree of Healing, Tree of Family and Tree of Love from a nearby dune. The three trees, found on the outskirts of the Old Bushman Camp, form an integral part of the ǂKhomani San's cultural heritage and marks the location of births, graves and sites of great cultural significance. Today the trees act as symbolic markers of what the San community lost when they were evicted from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.Images from this trip document the first excursions into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and were a central part of the work on oral history and mapping in the first years of research.
