A fairly large number of Saldanha-based trawlers were forced to take shelter in Table Bay this week because of the high winds at sea. According to port officials the vessels were all wooden pelagic catchers and their skippers had indicated that the off-shore area between Saldanha and Cape Town had been hammered by south-easterly winds of up to 70 knots. Table Bay itself was lashed by a gale with gusts of up to 55 knots.

This R88 000 automated control fire engine, the first to be seen in South African, has won orders worth more than R3-million for suppliers, FMC (Pty) of Stikland. FMC makes smaller machines and plans to make this American-designed one locally as well. Pump priming, rewinding of hose reels and other functions are pushbutton controlled. The vehicle can carry a seven-man crew and 2 800 litres of water. Its top speed: 120 km an hour.
