Description: Site-clearing for Pelikan Park - the new Indian housing development stretching from the False bay coast to Zeekoevlei - has destroyed one of the largest remaining area of coastal dune land in the Western Cape. The development has taken over an area proposed as a nature reserve to protect the area's unique vegetation. No alternative reserve has been planned. City engineer Mr Jan Brand's 1982 Greening of the City report recommended the creation of a 427 hectare Strandfontein Fynbos Nature Reserve to protect the largest remaining area coastal fynbos in metropolitan Cape Town and said residential development should be planned around the reserve.
