Description: Small map of Africa from the "Keras Promontoire" and "Mer d'Ethiopie" in the South [Cape of Good Hope area] to Libye [Libya] and Egypte [Egypt] in the North. The map shows the Golfe d'Arabie [marking the Red Sea not the Arabian Gulf], Asie [currently Yemen and Saudi Arabia], "Isle Menuthias" [Madagascar], Ocean Occidental [Atlantic Ocean], "Golfe Hesperique" [Gulf of Guinea], "Ocean Meridional" [Indian Ocean], "Golfe de Barbarie" [Mozambique Channel] and "Mer d'Hippade" [western part of the Indian Ocean]. The map also indicates lakes, rivers, some mountain ranges and place names., The map is headed "De l'Afrique. Figure LXXXV. [page] 219". Extracted from Mallet's "Description de l'Universe" (Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683), of which volume III comprised a "comprehensive history of ancient and modern Africa." The names of peoples, towns and islands are given in Latin.
